Free guided walks and hikes around Wałbrzych

Sunday at 10:00 in the car park on the pass below Wielka Sowa, or at 11:00 outside the basilica in Strzegom: that is how the free guided walks run every season by organisations from our area get under way. Stowarzyszenie Sudeckie 9sił takes groups up nine summits around Wałbrzych, the LOT Aglomeracji Wałbrzyskiej leads walks through the towns of the region and out into the countryside, and in autumn 2026, for Wałbrzych's 600th anniversary, Zamek Książ has added a series of its own.

When
in 2026: mountains May–June and September–October, Sundays at 10:00; towns on Saturdays and Sundays in summer and on Sundays in autumn, usually at 11:00

How it works: turn up and walk

Every walk has a set time and a set meeting point — by a railway station, outside a town hall, in a car park on a pass — and from there the group sets off with the guide; the next dates, with addresses, are in the list below. Taking part costs nothing, but tickets are another matter: in previous years the LOT made it clear that its walks do not include admission to ticketed attractions. If you want to go underground at the Stara Kopalnia after the walk, plan for the extra time and a ticket. According to the LOT, its summer walks in those years took two to three hours; for a mountain hike, set aside half a day, because the climb alone from the meeting point to the summit takes anything from three-quarters of an hour to almost two hours. The guides speak Polish and there is no mention of an interpreter — worth knowing in advance if not everyone in your group speaks the language.

Nine summits with the Sudeckie 9sił guides

Stowarzyszenie Sudeckie 9sił brings together guides and Sudetes enthusiasts. Its “9 szczytów” (‘nine summits’) programme takes walkers up nine mountains around Wałbrzych: Chełmiec, Borowa, Dzikowiec Wielki, Wielka Sowa, Kalenica, Włodzicka Góra, Rogowiec, Gomólnik Mały and Góra św. Anny. These are exactly the summits we describe on our page about mountains and lookout towers — with the length of each ascent, the towers and how to get there from us. You meet at 10:00, usually where the trail begins: outside the town hall in Boguszów-Gorce for Chełmiec, by the railway station in Głuszyca for Rogowiec, in the car park on Przełęcz Sokola (Sokola Pass) below Wielka Sowa. The shape of the season changes from year to year: in 2025 it was nine Sundays in a row from the end of August to the end of October, in 2026 two blocks — one in May and June and one in September and October. Before you plan your stay around a particular walk, check the association's announcement on Facebook or give them a ring; the numbers are next to the dates below.

Town walks with the LOT Aglomeracji Wałbrzyskiej: coal, granite and red sandstone

The Lokalna Organizacja Turystyczna Aglomeracji Wałbrzyskiej, the regional tourist organisation, is based at Zamek Książ, and in 2026 it ran two series of free guided walks. In summer, under the banner “Odkrywaj lokalnie” (‘discover locally’), it ran walks on Saturdays and Sundays: from the end of June to the end of August there were twenty walks, not only through towns but also to Osówka, Włodzicka Góra, the Bystrzyca reservoir (Jezioro Bystrzyckie) and the Radków Rocks (Radkowskie Skały); close to us they started from, among other places, the pump room in Szczawno-Zdrój, the Śnieżka sweet factory in Świebodzice (“Czekoladowe Świebodzice”, ‘Chocolate Świebodzice’) and the fountain on Wałbrzych's market square. In autumn came a new series of Sunday walks at 11:00, “Dziedzictwo zaklęte w skale” (‘heritage set in stone’), taking in Nowa Ruda, Wałbrzych, Radków, Strzegom and Świdnica. In Nowa Ruda, coal — already mentioned in 1434 — was mined right up until 2000, and red sandstone was being quarried here as early as the 19th century. Strzegom calls itself Poland's granite capital: its granite went into, among other things, the monument at Westerplatte and the post-war shaft of Sigismund's Column in Warsaw, and the basilica where the walk starts has a bell from 1318, one of the oldest still ringing in Poland. Radków has 15th-century town walls, and it is here that the Road of a Hundred Bends (Szosa Stu Zakrętów) begins. And in Świdnica, where the walk follows the trail of stone, the town's most famous landmark — the Church of Peace — was built of wood, clay and straw.

Four castles of Wałbrzych — this time you need to register

For Wałbrzych's 600th anniversary Zamek Książ has put together a free series of its own, but here, unlike with the LOT, you have to register in advance. “Wałbrzych — miasto 4 zamków” (‘Wałbrzych, city of four castles’) is an anniversary series of four meetings in autumn 2026, each at 12:00: at Zamek Książ (2 October), in the ruins of Stary Książ (10 October), in the ruins of Nowy Dwór (17 October) and at Czettritz Castle (24 October). You can walk from us to the meetings at Zamek Książ and Stary Książ, as both start by the Książ gatehouse. Nowy Dwór is a lesser-known ruin on Zamkowa Góra, south of Podgórze: a castle of the Piast dukes of Świdnica and Jawor, recorded in 1364, which burned down after a lightning strike in 1581 and was never rebuilt. The Czettritz family, owners of Nowy Dwór from 1434, went on to build a castle in the centre of Wałbrzych in 1604–1628, today's Czettritz Castle; from 1857 it housed the administration of the Hochberg estates, and the complex includes the villa where Princess Daisy died in 1943. Registration is through the castle's booking system; to see whether anything similar follows once the anniversary year is over, keep an eye on the castle's news section, linked at the bottom of this page.

Without a car: by train to the meeting point

The nearest station, Wałbrzych Szczawienko, is a 15–18-minute walk from us and lies on the same line as Wałbrzych Główny; from Główny, Koleje Dolnośląskie (Lower Silesian Railways) trains towards Kłodzko and Kudowa-Zdrój stop at Głuszyca, Świerki Dolne and Nowa Ruda. In Głuszyca the meeting point for Rogowiec and Gomólnik Mały is right by the station. In Nowa Ruda a green-marked trail leads from the station to the town hall (the start for Góra św. Anny), while in Świerki you still have a walk from the station to the church (the start for Włodzicka Góra) — check the way on a map. The journey itself is part of the fun: near Jedlina the train enters a 1,601-metre tunnel under Mały Wołowiec, and between Ludwikowice Kłodzkie and Nowa Ruda the line crosses viaducts up to about 35 metres high. There are only a few trains a day, so check your trains there and back in the timetable before you set off. For Świdnica there is bus 31 from a stop 600 metres from the house — at weekends it runs only a few times, so check the timetable — and to the meetings at the Książ gate you can walk through the woods in 20 minutes.
